History

Early Beginnings: 1937 and 1938

Soccer at Boyertown High School began as early as the 1937 season according to news clippings in the Pottstown Mercury. In an article dated 6/4/38, a number of students received varsity letters for soccer at the end of school year banquet, which suggests games were played. To date, no evidence could be found of any articles or scores related to games played that season or prior to 1937.

The 1938 season has many references in the Pottstown Mercury and Reading Times. There are gaps in the research, as not all scheduled games have an article or reported outcome. This is also the first year the soccer team was recognized in the school yearbook. From the news clippings, it appears the school had a Varsity, Junior Varsity, 9th grade team, and an intramural program. Of note, one of the news clippings contains information from a school director meeting about the effort to replace the soccer program with football for the 1939 season. This effort was successful and the boys soccer program ceased to exist from 1939 until the introduction of a JV program in 1975. Two years later the high school fielded its first Varsity team under coach Bill Krause. These two events are considered the birth of the modern boys soccer program at Boyertown High School.
